A Guide to Converting Metrics

Metric Minute
by David F. Urban, MCC, Inc.
WRMCA Technical Committee Member

There was a large request which stemmed from the WRMCA winter concrete seminar to provide the Association members with information on metrics. As a member of the technical committee, I volunteered to provide some additional information on the subject. Currently the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has a fair number of metric projects currently in progress. As a ready mixed concrete supplier for several of these projects we have had to submit mix designs and deliver concrete in the metric standard. This process can be relatively painless if you have the proper formulas to convert the usual U.S. standard quantities to the metric standard.

As you can see below, I have included a conversion chart which covers all, or nearly all the conversion factors (relative to our industry) which are, or may be necessary. There are also several publications available from the Department of Transportation concerning metric conversions which may prove helpful.
